To keep card details up to date most card schemes have created services to inform customers about changes to card and account details, for example, when the expiry date of a card changes. Using an account updater, it is possible to update the details of stored card details automatically. This way it is possible to keep all information fresh and up to date and maintain continuity in your payment cycle, without the buyer having to re-fill their card details after they have changed. Card details are automatically updated when the following events occur.
  • A new expiry date is available
  • A new card is issued, replacing the old card
  • A card is reported as stolen or lost
  • The buyer has no longer authorized the merchant to automatically charge the card
Two types of account updater are offered; batch and real time. The batch account updater allows you to define a set of stored cards to update whereas the real time account updater checks for card updates during transaction processing.

Enable account updater

To enable an account updater on your instance, fill out the account updater enrollment form. One form covers manual, scheduled, and real-time updates, so select every type you want to use. List every merchant account, merchant ID (MID), and region that you want to enroll. For other questions, contact support. If you’re already enrolled for this service with the schemes, filling out the form is still required to set up the necessary data points in the systems as well as the downstream partner’s system.

Before you enroll

Enrollment happens with each card scheme, so the form asks for your business details and the identifiers that your acquirer or payment service provider assigns to you for each scheme. Collect these before you start.
  • Business details: Parent company name, line of business, business address, internet address, merchant category codes, merchant descriptors, telephone number, contact name, and email address.
  • Card Acceptor ID (CAID): Your card acceptor ID for Visa. Your acquirer or processor can provide it. For Mastercard, the merchant ID is often the same value.
  • Acquirer identifiers: The acquirer identifiers used for your merchant accounts, such as the Visa acquirer bank identification number (BIN). This is usually a six to eight digit value that starts with a 4.
  • American Express Service Establishment (SE) number: If you have several SE numbers under one top-level SE number, provide the top-level number.
  • Discover merchant ID: Your Discover MID.
